Yikui (Coy) Gu Exhibition
The artist, Yikui (Coy) Gu, will present a lecture on their work on January 18, 2024 at 10:00am-11:00am in Scholes Library. The exhibition opening reception will follow later in the day from 5:30pm-7:30pm in the School Library Project Space.Celphies
Celphies is a body of work produced by Philadelphia artist Yikui (Coy) Gu during Summer 2023 while he was the BIPOC Artist in Residence at Alfred University. Members of the Alfred community were invited to submit an electronic device of theirs such as a cellphone or tablet, along with a selfie, to the artist. The participants' devices were then rendered useless as their portraits were painted directly onto the screens of their old devices. This body of work touches on notions of identity as it's connected to our physical likenesses, the integral nature our devices play in our lives, the ways in which we present ourselves in the virtual realm, and the planned obsolescence of our electronic devices. This series continues to evolve as Gu is now painting onto the screens of laptops, televisions, and monitors.
